"A virtual field trip programme for New Zealand schools investigating the origins, recovery and use of coal and exploring how coal can help meet New Zealand's future energy needs"

Delivering Coal to the Classroom

LEARNZ programmes have been operating since 1995 offering virtual field trips to New Zealand schools to places such as Antarctica, Fiordland, Tongariro National Park, Lake Rotoiti, Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Hauraki Gulf.

This programme is run in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Solid Energy and Contact Energy.

Donald Reid, formerly Head of Science at Ellesmere College, is the LEARNZ Secondary Teacher. With Solid Energy staff he explores the origins of coal, how it is mined, how coal can help meet New Zealand's future energy needs and the uses, characteristics and future of carbon compounds. These Field Trips support the teaching of science and geography up to NCEA Level 3 and include visits to underground and opencast mines.

Each Field Trip offers online resources to prepare students for their experience and an online daily diary, digital video, audiconferences, email and a web board provides a range of opportunities to engage students with remote experts and the learning adventure. Teachers are fully supported with newsletters, a teacher manual and a phone helpdesk.

School registration is $45 incl gst. Solid Energy will cover the registration fee for all schools in its local communities - Canterbury, the West Coast, Huntly and Ohai (a full list of schools can be found on the LEARNZ website). There are no further charges for field trip enrolments.

For all enquiries on Solid Energy paying the registration fee in its local communities, please contact us. To find out more about the LEARNZ programme go to www.learnz.org.nz
