Stockton (Opencast)

The Stockton open pit mining operation, the largest in New Zealand, is located at between 500m and 1,100m above sea level in the Buller Coalfield, 35km north of Westport on the West Coast of the South Island. The current operations are located on an extensive, moderately undulating plateau. The area experiences high rainfall of approximately 6,000mm annually, cool temperatures, considerable cloud and mist, and occasional frosts and snow.
