Solid Energy awards two scholarships in Southland

15 February 2005

Two Southland students have been awarded tertiary scholarships from Solid Energy New Zealand.

Each year, Solid Energy awards tertiary scholarships to senior students attending high schools in Solid Energy's local mining communities. Applicants from Huntly, the West Coast and Southland are eligible to win scholarships worth up to $8000 over a period of up to four years of tertiary study.

Solid Energy developed new judging criteria this year, giving preference to students studying subject areas that complement Solid Energy's business, including information technology, engineering, earth science and finance. Academic records, contributions to local communities and leadership qualities were also taken into consideration.

Solid Energy Chief Operating Officer Barry Bragg is happy with the progress of Solid Energy's scholarship scheme.

"Solid Energy is a company that needs skilled employees in every area of its business. This year we decided to focus our scholarship programme on disciplines that offer students in our local mining communities the chance to develop these kind of skills. We look forward to seeing their progress in the future."

This year's Southland Solid Energy Scholarship Awardees are :

Brogan McIlwrick, 18, from Central Southland College, who plans to study Civil Engineering at Canterbury University and Clare Buchanan, 18, also from Central Southland College, who plans to study a Bachelor of Commerce and Law at Otago University.
