Solid Energy supports inaugural Gore District Community Awards

21 May 2007

Solid Energy will be major sponsor of the Gore District Council's inaugural community awards to be held in October this year.

The new awards format, which will celebrate excellence within the district and service to the local community, combine the existing Civic Award with those previously presented and organised by the Mataura Lions Club, Eastern Southland Chamber of Commerce and Toastmasters. Two new categories of Young Achiever of the Year and Excellence in Art and Culture have also been added.

Solid Energy Chief Operating Officer, Barry Bragg, says: "Solid Energy is really pleased to support these new awards which recognise some of Gore's outstanding achievers. We've been part of the Southland community for many years this is a great go-ahead part of the country and we believe that it has significant potential in meeting New Zealand's energy needs into the future. We hope that this is the beginning of a long relationship with the district council and look forward to the awards presentation in October."

"We are delighted to have Solid Energy's support," says Gore District Council Chief Executive, Steve Parry. "The partnership between the Council and Solid Energy is an exciting and rewarding development."

Gore District Council will be calling for nominations for the awards in late July.

"The Civic Award will be the premier award presented on the night because it usually recognises decades of service to the community as opposed to an outstanding performance in any given year," Mr Parry says.

The awards will be presented on Saturday 27 October at the Gore Town and Country Club with guest speaker, former All Black, Eric Rush.

"Thanks to Solid Energy's generous sponsorship, tickets will be reasonably priced so as many members of the community can attend as possible, which is important to both Solid Energy and the Gore District Council," says Mr Parry. Details of ticket sales will be available nearer the time.
