West Coast Rotary Clubs providing a dictionary for region’s Year 6 school pupils

26 May 2009

Solid Energy is supporting a West Coast Rotary Club project which will provide an illustrated dictionary to each of the region’s 480 Year 6 pupils.

Project Coordinators Murry Cave and Rae Eder, say the Greymouth, Hokitika and Westport Rotary Clubs took the idea to primary school principals who were enthusiastic.  “A number of principals felt that the dictionaries would find special favour with boys because they have detailed drawings of things like motorcycles, engines, engine parts and drawings showing how things work.”

As the recipients grow older and move on to intermediate or high school, the Rotary Clubs hope they will pass their dictionaries on to younger sisters and brothers or leave them with the schools for distribution to other pupils.  Mr Hopkinson says the clubs would consider repeating the exercise in about five years’ time.

The dictionary is the Usborne Illustrated Dictionary and Solid Energy has agreed to contribute a little over half the cost of the project.
